Another Atlantic City casino set to close
Yet another Atlantic City casino is set to close at the end of this summer, despite the fact that it is still profitable and was remodelled as recently as 2025.
The Mardi Gras-themed Showboat is set to close on August 31st after 27 years of business and constant expansion.
If a suitable buyer is not found soon the closure will go ahead, putting thousands of people out of work.
The Showboat is one of four Atlantic City casinos that could potentially close before the year is out. These announcements have understandably disappointed and angered many casino workers and enthusiasts alike.
Showboat employees took the world-famous boardwalk on 24th July to make themselves heard, chanting "Keep Showboat open" and carrying placards which reinforced that sentiment.
Chris Wade, who has worked as a cook at the Showboat since it opened, commented: "We’re a profitable casino; there’s no reason to shut us down. You said we were like a family, and if we worked hard, we would all prosper. Now you’re turning your back on us."
According to Showboat staff, there are companies interested in buying the casino. "Showboat is a good, viable property," remarked Eve Davis, who has worked there as a cocktail waitress for the entire 27 years of business. "If Caesars don't want it, fine – sell it. We just need someone to come in here and love it."
Then and now
Atlantic City was once a thriving seaside resort and gambling paradise. It became known as "the World's Playground" during the Prohibition era, when many of its restaurants and nightclubs secretly served alcohol and ran casino games in back rooms.
Now though, the city has one of the highest unemployment rates in the United States at 10.3 per cent, as a growing number of establishments are going out of business.
Analysts say that the city no longer flourishes like it used to because many surrounding states now have their own impressive gambling facilities. Pennsylvania, which neighbours New Jersey, has usurped the latter's title as the US's second casino state (after Nevada).
